Engineers have used NTC thermistor probes for measuring temperature and liquid levels in a multitude of industries that includes medical technology, automotive electronics, and green energy. The applications of an NTC thermistor are almost endless, and their purpose is hugely significant for many applications.
Although not seen, NTC thermistors are all around us, where we work and live. From the moment that we open our eyes and go and make coffee until we finish the day relaxing watching Netflix, toroids allow everyday devices to run effectively. These devices are found in our cars, computers, and appliances we use to prepare food.
Without the help of thermistor sensors, many appliances, automobiles, and medical equipment would malfunction or not work at all. These devices are a design consideration made by engineers for products the generate heat or cold, energy, accuracy, and control. Back in the late 1960s, it was common to find about two thermistors in a car. By the 90s, that number moved to about 60, and now there are upwards of 100 NTC thermistors found in a standard vehicle.
Within the medical field, a thermistor sensing probe is critical because of the device’s high sensitivity, its high accuracy, and its interchangeability. For instance, a respirator utilizes a thermistor to ensure proper functionality.
The air that enters a patient’s lung must be precisely 37°C, which is the same as body temperature. A temperature-sensing device, like a thermistor, analyzes the air temperature. The device then sends a signal to the respirator to compensates temperature as needed.
