NTC Thermistors are commonly used in a wide range of applications and devices. Knowing the specific application you need allows you to make design considerations that benefit the construction process. Below, we want to take the time to discuss important application notes.
Temperature Measurements: Thermistors are the most common devices used for temperature measurement because they offer low costs and high sensitivity. Resistor networks are used (to linearize the signal) because of the non-linearity of the R-T curve. It is possible to achieve precise temperature measurements that can be achieved with simple electronic equipment.
Temperature Control: Thermistors are often used as on-off controls in the temperature alarm system. As temperature increases and exceeds a defined value, the resistance decreases. The current becomes high enough to engage the temperature alarm or to turn off the heating system. For a high sensitivity thermistor, there is only a 4% resistance change for 1°C. Thermistors can easily control the temperature.
Temperature Compensation: Electric components, such as amplifiers and integrated circuits, have positive temperature coefficients of resistance. An NTC thermistor is a great solution to compensate for this effect. It provides overall improved temperature stability in electrical equipment. Engineers typically use chip thermistors and leaded discs for this application.
Flow Detections & Liquid Level: When a thermistor is submerged in a gas or liquid, the devices' dissipation is significantly different. Good design considerations must define the precise operating temperature range.
