Understanding and Using RTD Sensor

Resistance Temperature Detectors are commonly used to measure temperatures in both industrial and scientific applications. An RTD provides a near linear resistance value change that is proportional to the temperature changes. The sensors are stable, accurate, and reusable.RTD Temperature Sensor, PT100 to PT 1000

Other advantages found when using RTD sensors include:

  1. Long term stability
  2. High accuracy
  3. Ability to measure over a wide temperature range
  4. Easy Interchangeability

Two standards exist for platinum RTDs. These standards help to designate specification and classes for RTD’s.  The International Standard is IEC 751.  The American standard is ASTM E1137.
